INDUSTRIAL WASTE MANAGEMENT

Assessed the regulatory impacts on the Cement industry for a major cement manufacturer. The assessment was driven by changes in the requirements for the management of Cement Kiln Dust (CKD) and identified the regulatory incentives and roadblocks for the beneficial reuse of CKD.

  • Lead team of 4 professionals.
  • Assessed regulatory status of CKD in 12 Mid-Western states.
  • Assessed the incentives and disincentives for the beneficial reuse of CKD in 34 of the fifty states.
  • Developed an economic model for use in determining whether to manage CKD as a waste or a resource for beneficial reuse.

Successfully integrated a waste audit process with an ongoing pollution prevention program for a Fortune 50 Client. The results were used to refine a developing Environmental Management System and to develop an Environmental Information Management System.

  • Audit process was structured to identify pollution prevention, waste minimization opportunities.
  • Audit results became part of the Environmental Management System database and became the core of the information management system.
  • Project was designed to integrate with the goals and objectives of production at the plant level.
  • Project was completed on time and within budget.

Wastewater treatment process for slaughter waste for Vineland Live and Dressed Poultry, Vineland, NJ. Project entailed bench-scale simulation of BOD removal by chemical oxidation, scale-up, air-flotation, and the recycling of all solids through a rendering process that produced protein additives for chicken feed.

  • Led design team of 3-professionals.
  • Design relied upon chemical oxidation of BOD using Chlorine Dioxide generated on site.
  • Bio-solids were processed to be suitable for rendering as a chicken feed supplement.

Spray irrigation field for effluent from slaughterhouse waste treatment.

  • Design was for a temperate climate.
  • Crops were Deciduous Forest and Reed Canary Grass, about 20 acres of each.
  • Operating costs were recovered through sales of reed canary grass.

Physical-chemical treatment process for Vinyl floor covering wastes.

  • Project involved bench-scale simulation and scale-up of chemical oxidation of BOD, carbon adsorption, pH adjustment with plant waste caustics and acids, and chlorination.
  • Developed full scale design.
  • Completed project within budget.

Recycling of Industrial Catalysts treatment chemicals for Mathey-Bishop, Inc

  • Developed specifications and marketing strategies for the wastes, generated during recovery of precious metals from industrial catalysts.
  • Centered on ferrous aluminum sulfate compounds and developed recovery strategies for material at a purity suitable for use as drinking water and wastewater coagulant aids.

Metals recovery and reuse from Industrial Sludges

  • Developed conceptual design of a beryllium recovery process.
  • Created beryllium sludge management plan for a Fortune 500, catalyst recovery firm.
