J Spear Associates, Inc. Teams with Timothy Stark, PhD, PE of the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana to Provide Services to Designers and Operators of Bioreactor Landfills

JW Spear, Sr., P.E. and Tim Stark, PhD, P.E. have teamed up to provide design review, diagnostic, and forensic services relative to Bioreactor Landfill and Leachate Recirculation Technologies.

A worst-case scenario in a bioreactor landfill is the addition so much liquid or use of an injection pressure that results in slope instability. Several dramatic cases of slope instability have developed during leachate recirculation. One such site is shown in the photograph below that occurred during leachate injection under high pressure.

State-of-the-practice testing and slope stability analyses can be conducted to evaluate the stability of new or existing slopes in the presence of leachate recirculation and to estimate that amount of liquid build-up that could be tolerated without significantly lowering the factor of safety. In addition, stability analyses can be used to assess the impact of various remedial measures. The effect of liner temperature on slope stability and geosynthetic performance can also be evaluated.

Other geotechnical issues related to bioreactors that can be addressed by the Team include estimated and actual settlement of bioreactors. The pattern and distribution of the settlement and the nature of the settlement induced by the leachate recirculation. Additional important design aspect for bioreactors that can be addressed is the amount of liquid required to induce a certain percentage of settlement for a particular landfill height and the relative effectiveness of the leachate distribution system design parameters in preventing side-slope seeps and geotechnical instability.

In addition to the engineering aspects of Bioreactor Landfill and Leachate Recirculation technology, this team is uniquely qualified to address operational issues related to Bioreactor and Leachate Recirculation performance.

If you are interested in a no obligation consult with this team,
